A student from Lasalle College of the Arts had covered a short flight of stairs in her HDB block with gold foil, all in the name of art. It had been to beautify the otherwise grey and dull corridor of nearly all blocks in Singapore.
However, all that glitters is not gold. Outraged netizens have condemned this act as ‘guerilla art’ and ‘vandalism. The Jalan Besar (the neighbourhood where the ‘heinous’ act was commited) town council had already asked the student to remove the foil.
What constitutes as street art? It seems like the only thing that distinguishes street art and vandalism is whether the town council contacts you before or after you have done the deed.
What are the benefits and disadvantages of acts like these? Why are we so opposed to these acts? What do we stand to lose?
I really don’t know.
